A laryngectomy permanently alters the anatomy of the airway. The larynx (voice box) has been removed and people with a laryngectomy breathe permanently through a stoma (opening in the neck). There is no airflow through the mouth and nose. If there is a need for emergency resuscitation, it is essential that mouth to stoma resuscitation is given. People with a laryngectomy cannot be oxygenated through the mouth or nose. Help medical personnel identify that you have had a laryngectomy by wearing a ‘neck breather alert bracelet’ and by carrying a ‘neck breather emergency card’.
